Fish Health and Selecting the Right Fish Treatments and Medicines

Just like in human health, if your fish appear distressed, it is important that you further investigate the possible causes before using any treatments. While your fish could be subject to one of a range of fish diseases, more often the cause of their distress is their environment –particularly water quality.

All natural ecosystems contain both healthy and harmful bacteria, and just like in any other environment, it is important that you create a setting in your aquarium that allows good bacteria to flourish and bad bacteria to flounder. To establish and maintain this environment, you need to test your water regularly and ensure that pH, temperature, maturity and hardness are at the right levels. If your fish appear erratic or unwell, this is the first thing to address.

If the water quality if fine, then there is a chance that your fish may be suffering from a parasitical or biological disease. White Spot is a common parasitic infection that is easy to spot – you’ll see pinhead sized white spots occurring on the body of your fish and its fins.

Biological infections can unfortunately be harder to detect. In general, an outward sign of a biological disease is a patchy spread of white on your fish, as opposed to pin-sized dots.

As with everything these days, the internet can provide you with a wealth of useful information to help you diagnose various health problems in your fish. Images in particular can be very useful in this regard. Make sure you do the proper research first, as this will help you make the right decision when purchasing fish medicines and water treatments.
