Pond Treatments and Pond Fish Medicines

Pond treatments can be used for a variety of purposes within the realm of pond care:

Pond Setup and Maintenance

From initial setup to ongoing maintenance, your pond will likely require a range of pond treatments over its lifetime. Tap water treatments, pond water conditioners, pond filter treatments, pond salt treatments, pond sludge treatments and pond bacterial aids are all examples of the various kinds of treatments that your pond may require at various times.

Pond Care and Pond Problems

There are also treatments available to help you tackle various pond problems that you may encounter during your time as a pond keeper. Some of these include blanket weed treatments and green water treatments. Fish medicines, fish disease treatments and koi treatments are also available to help cure and eliminate various fish diseases.

Blanket Weed & Green Water Treatments

Algae is a widespread and often ongoing problem for pond keepers, particularly in the summer time. The two main forms of algae you may encounter in your pond are blanket weed and green water. Normally the two types do not co-exist, since the presence of green water does not allow enough natural sunlight for blanket weed to grow well – and vice versa – blanket weed usually keeps the green water away.

One of the biggest mistakes that pond keepers make when they encounter these types of algae is emptying the pond and refilling it with clean water. Changing the matured water removes all the good bacteria and creates a fresh supply of nutrients for the algae to feed on, thus allowing it to begin multiplying again. Rather than emptying and refilling the pond, pond keepers should instead take advantage of the numerous pond treatments that are available.

Pond Treatment Chemicals

Pond treament chemicals include dye treatments that stop the algae from absorbing natural sunlight, effectively “starving” the weed by stopping the process of photosynthesis. Other chemical products include various types of aquatic herbicides and weed killers. These need to be used very carefully as directed, since they can also be detrimental to your other pond plants, especially water lilies. It is also highly advisable that you remove as much blanket weed as possible before applying a chemical treatment, otherwise it will rot on the bottom of your pond and you will have to use a pond vacuum or sludge removal treatment to get rid of it!

Natural Bacterial Pond Treaments

Natural bacterial treatments are also available, and these act by introducing good bacteria to the pond that feeds on the same nutrients that blanket weed needs to thrive, effectively reducing its food source and capacity for growth. Also available are UV Clarifier Filters that will kill green water.

Since every pond ecosystem is different, selecting the right natural treatment usually requires a bit of trial and error. Fortunately, when you find one that works, you can be sure that you are looking after your pond in an environmentally friendly way and there is the added positive that excess pond water can be used on your garden without any negative effects!
